Orchard Garden's mascot is the lion. The lion represents the school's core PRIDE (Perseverance Respect Integrity Daring Excellence) values. 3rd grade students watched this video clip of Mindy Sterling reading, The Library Lion. We had a discussion about all the honorable qualities of the Lion in the story and how we, as OGPS members, could learn from the Lion to help us be the best students we can possibly be.
We started this lesson by sketching a lion's face on an 18"x24" piece of paper. Students then painted in their lion's face and ears using a golden color. Then brown and yellow paint was distributed for the students to make the mane. We talked about painterly brush strokes and how the brush could do much of the mixing on the paper which makes the hair for the lion look more realistic.
Finally, when the lion's were dry, each student got a set of words that represent the OGPS core values and those that the class came up with that are specific to the character traits of the Lion from the story. Students were asked to cut and glue these word onto the mane of their lions as a way of representing all the great qualities their lions possess.
